Everyone likes to feel as though they are a part of something. Simple instances give people a sense of belonging. Inclusive education offers this to students with intellectual or developmental disabilities, which is especially important considering this population is typically left out in many scenarios. Not only does inclusive education offer these students a sense of belonging but it provides many academic and social opportunities to both students with and without disabilities. While Dr. Schwartz addressed the lower levels in education these same principles still stand. College is a time where many find themselves and grow into their adult lives, this should be no different for students with disabilities that are just as capable. On the flip side college students without disabilities can become more accommodating to other's needs and become more earnest individuals. Educating oneself on these issues are where to start. Once an understanding of these issues is developed personal changes, no matter how small can make big impacts. Join Clubs!
Best Buddies is a national and international club that allows peers with and without disabilities to connect. There are over 1400 chapters nationwide and 400 on college campuses. If your school does not have a chapter, look into other clubs/organizations or even start your own chapter!
