Achieving Better Learning Environments for those with Disabilities
What is ABLED?This blog serves as a resource and discussion space for students with disabilities at the university level. ABLED compares the occupational health of disabled and non disabled students as a way to educate others and draw attention to the different needs within a collegiate scope. This perspective through occupation aims to create a safe space for these students as discussing these issues can hopefully improve levels of comfort with such topics and shed light on a matter that impacts all students. No matter a label or diagnosis we believe all students are ABLED in someway.

The importance of ABLEDThe differences between students with and without disabilities is prominent, especially when looking at the success rates of college students with disabilities . As ABLED examines the occupational health of these students one is able to see the reasoning behind why disabled students have such lower rates of success.

OUT OF ONE HUNDRED ONLY...
college students with disabilities are enrolled as full time students
college students with disabilities actually finish their undergraduate degree
college aged students with disabilities enroll in undergraduate programs

ABLED examines the occupational health of these individuals as a way to prove the capabilities of disabled students that are often doubted. One's occupation, in relation to occupational health, is defined as the various activities of life in which individuals, groups, or populations engage in. These include activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, rest/sleep, education/work, play, leisure, social participation, and health management. For college aged individuals the most common and impactful occupations are education and social participation, yet sadly those with disabilities are most often left with less opportunities to practice these.

The following button leads to a brief powerpoint and brainstorm on how this project would begin. While some aspects may seem less relevant to the ABLED site, everything starts somewhere and that is important to share!
